Pet Paws

Summer 2005

To better serve our clients we are starting a newsletter.  This newsletter will be sent to all our

clients who have been boarded, groomed, trained, or participated in daycare in the past two years.

If you know some one who would enjoy our newsletter please pass this on to them.  If you would

prefer to receive the newsletter and promotional coupons via email please email us at petkeeper@pamperedpetsbedandbiscuit.com

Our newsletter will contain articles about pet care, grooming, dog obedience training and information

 about up coming events.

Basic Ingredients for the “Almost Perfect” Dog

  1. One clean bill of health

  2. One large portion of love

  3. One full measure of time spent with the master (you)

  4. A healthy diet

  5. One doghouse for outside, one crate for inside

  6. An abundance of regular exercise

  7. A bunch of socialization

  8. A generous amount of grooming

  9. A giant portion of “good doggies” and rewards

Missing ingredients result in behavior problems.  Over 60% of dogs in shelters are there as

a result of behavior problems or lack of identification.

Most Behavior Problems Are Correctable

Don’t despair!  Make sure your dog has a clean bill of health, and then contact your professional

trainer and/or animal behaviorist for help.

Prevention is always the best cure for behavior problems!  Lack of training and physical

and mental under stimulation (boredom) are primary causes of misbehavior.  They can be easily

prevented by enrolling in basic training classes and using Kong Dog Toys for healthy physical

and mental stimulation.  Kong Dog Toys are widely used and recommended for therapy and

prevention of under stimulation, boredom, separation anxiety and other behavior problems.

Pampered Pets Bed & Biscuit has two Certified Dog Trainers on staff to offer several training

options.  Dr. Terri Fedderke at Napoleon Veterinary Clinic has a special interest in behavioral

modification consultations.  Doggie Daycare is also a good option if you work long days to help

with boredom or separation anxiety.  Dog learn how to properly play with other dogs, socialization

skills and manners.  In our retail area we have Kong Dog toys and other treats to help keep your

pet busy while you are gone for the day.

Give us a call if you have any questions about training or daycare.

PetsFirst  Program

Starting July 1, 2005 we will offer the PetsFirst Program.  In keeping with our goal to make

your pet’s comfort and needs our utmost priority and providing the ultimate in pet hospitality

and care, Pampered Pets Bed & Biscuit will now provide a proactive ‘sick pet care’ program

called PetsFirst.  This program is designed to give our boarding clients added peace of mind.

The program covers any unexpected illness or injury during your pet’s boarding stay, or within

five days of your pet’s departure from the kennel.  For example, if your pet is seen by a veterinarian

for an upset stomach or lameness while at Pampered Pets or within five days after boarding,

PetsFirst would provide up to $200.00 for its veterinary care.

The program does not cover any pre-existing or chronic health or medical conditions.  Also not

covered is an injury caused by one of your pets to another if they share the same suite as

requested by you.

We decided to offer this unique program as a natural expansion of our commitment to providing

our pet clients and their owners with the best possible ‘sick pet care’ protection, combined with

all of our other programs and services.  All pets are required to participate in this program.

Pampered Pets requires that all original claims for veterinary services be submitted to them within

two weeks of your pet’s boarding departure date for payment or reimbursement.  We also require

that your veterinarian forward diagnosis and treatment history to us prior to payment or reimbursement.

Pampered Pets Bed & Biscuit always puts PetsFirst.  If you have any questions about this new

program, please call us at 419-592-7387.

New play yard

We are constructing a new, 6,000 sq ft grass play yard, which will be open in June.  This play

yard will be perfect for our group play activities.  It will provide more room for running and ball fetching.

We will have one of our swimming pools in the yard plus slides.  Our future plans also include

building agility equipment and adding trees for a nature walk.

We offer several playtime activities for our canine guest, including playschool, movies, Brush and

Fluff, Skinny Dips, and a Taking Care of Business walk.

We have not left our feline guest.  Every night is Lappy Happy Hour.  Cats explore the cat room

while lapping up salmon or beef flavored Lappy Milk.  The cat room has a new Kitty Sky Tower.

The Kitty Sky Tower features three perching platforms, a hideaway hut, six sisal-covered posts,

a cotton rope and a furry mouse toy.  During The Frisky Feline play activity the “frisky” guest

will experience one-on-one time with an attendant while they explore our cat room, climb on the

Sky Tower , or stalk everything from catnip mice to feathers.  This 20 minute high-intensity

session is essential for a curious cat.

We can customize your pet’s vacation and include some of his or her favorite activities.

Add a day at the spa to make it a vacation they will always remember.

Your pet deserves to have fun while you are away

A dog and that are correctly socialized to one another can

become best of buddies; whereas the same two animals,

if socialization does not occur, often become bitter enemies.

Helpful Homecoming Hints*

Our Canine Companions

Excitement – Your dog will be very excited when picked-up.  For this reason do not feed your pet (even though they will act hungry) for at least three hours, and then be very careful not to overfeed them.  Excitement will cause your dog to pant a lot, lose body water and be thirsty.  Give them a few ice cubes to tide them over until feeding time.  Again, in this excited state, excessive food and water consumption can create problems.

Behavior – Sometimes temporary behavior changes are noticeable as a mood swing, weight gains or losses or an energy level increase or decrease may occur.  These behavior changes are often their reaction to unfamiliar surroundings.  Kennel life can be very exciting and each dog reacts and adjusts quite differently to changes in their daily routine.

Our Feline Friends

Stress – Your cat will react much differently to a change in their environment compared to a dog.  They do suffer from stress and this means that their normal immune process can be affected as well as their eating and digestive habits.  After you have picked up your cat from the kennel, be sure to keep him locked in at home for a few days before allowing him to roam.  Just as they had to adjust to the kennel, they will need to readjust to being home again.  Allow them to find that “at home” feeling again before letting them out of the house.

Remember, the more often your cat boards, the more adjusted they will become with the kennel environment and the easier the boarding process will become for your and your cat.

The Skunks are out

The skunks are out and dogs love to chase them.  If your pup has had a run in with a skunk here is a “Skunk Juice” recipe to take the smell out.  If you do not have a place or the desire to bath them at home, bring them to us and we will do it for you.

Mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of baking soda and a teaspoonful of liquid soap in an open pan.  Bathe the affected pet with the mixture and rinse with plain water.  The odor should vanish instantly.  The chemicals that impart the vile smell in the skunk’s spray combine with the oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide to neutralize the offensive odor.  Do not put the mixture in a bottle, because the whole thing would explode.

Neuman Goes Back Home

Our resident cat, Neuman, has gone back home to his family.  We all will miss him but his family can now have him back at home.  Neuman will still spend his vacations with us.

We have adopted two new kittens.  They grey medium haired and only three months old.  We are looking for names for them.  We need a boy and a girl name.  If you have any suggestions please call or email us.  Stop in and meet the two new members to the Pampered Pets family.
